Pakistani Hindu refugees in Delhi discuss future as eviction looms

Pakistani Hindu refugees in Delhi are facing possible eviction from their settlements, particularly in Majnu Ka Tila, following a Delhi High Court ruling that upheld the clearing of encroachments on the Yamuna floodplain.

The refugees, who fled religious persecution in Pakistan, held a large panchayat to discuss their future and plan to meet Delhi’s Chief Minister to seek resettlement assistance. Many of them were granted Indian citizenship last year, but they now feel betrayed as their homes are under threat.

Although the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has not issued new eviction notices, media reports indicate that the court’s decision allows the removal of settlements. The refugees fear they will be left without a place to live, as they lack legal representation and rely on community support.
