[ Eastern Eye ] Diwali celebrations return to Trafalgar Square

London’s annual Diwali celebrations will take place at Trafalgar Square on October 27th, organized by City Hall.  The event will feature 200 dancers in traditional attire, food stalls, music, dancing, and comedy shows from Soho Theatre. New this year is a space for devotional musicians, known as Bhajan singers, to perform. Mayor Sadiq Khan emphasized the event’s role in bringing together people of all backgrounds to celebrate the symbolic victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, with Sikhs also marking Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day. The festival’s central messages of peace and hope are particularly relevant in today’s global context.
