‘Whole generations’ of Hindus in Cambridge ‘missing out’ after temple closure

Since the closure of their local temple in 2019 due to water damage, the Hindu community in Cambridge has faced a significant lack of facilities, forcing many families to travel over an hour and a half to worship. This absence of a local spiritual hub has led to concerns that “whole generations” of young Hindus are growing up without a dedicated place to celebrate important festivals or engage in daily religious practices. In response, the Cambridge Hindu Temple and Community Centre (CHT) team has submitted a bid for land in Northstowe to build a new temple and multi-purpose community space. The proposed project aims to serve the wider public by dedicating nearly 80 percent of the site to community activities such as yoga, educational classes, and interfaith support, and it has already garnered significant financial backing and enthusiastic support from both Hindu residents and the local community.
