Indian survivors of Kashmir attack say gunmen asked if they were Hindus and opened fire

On April 22, 2025, a devastating militant attack occurred in the Pahalgam area of Indian-administered Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily Hindu tourists. Survivors recounted that the assailants, dressed in camouflage and posing as locals or security personnel, approached tourists and inquired about their religion. Those who identified as Hindus were shot at close range. The attack was claimed by a previously unknown group, the Kashmir Resistance. The Indian government has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants, an allegation Pakistan denies. This incident has significantly escalated tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with both countries warning of possible military responses.
