Ohio has become the first state in the U.S. to officially recognize Diwali and two other Hindu holidays as school holidays. The legislation, co-sponsored by Indian American State Senator Niraj Antani, was passed by the Ohio State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine. Starting in 2025, Hindu students in Ohio will be able to take time off for Diwali and two other religious holidays without academic penalties.
Senator Antani, the first Hindu American State Senator in Ohio’s history, emphasized the significance of this victory for the Hindu community. The law also allows students to take off for other important Hindu holidays, such as Navaratri, Pongal, and Krishna Janmashtami, among others. This initiative aims to ensure that Hindu students can fully observe their faith without worrying about their studies.
The Hindu American Foundation praised the legislation, highlighting its importance in fostering cultural understanding and inclusion. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has recognized Diwali as October 20 and 21 for 2025.
