Fort Bend County commissioners have unanimously approved the sale of fireworks for Diwali, marking the first time this will be allowed. The decision was made at an Oct. 8 meeting and will enable community members to purchase fireworks from late October through Nov. 1, the final day of Diwali celebrations.
This move comes after the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 608 in 2023, allowing counties to approve fireworks sales for Diwali with the commissioner’s court’s consent. The decision is a nod to the significant Asian American population in the county who celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Commissioner Dexter McCoy expressed pride in enabling residents to participate in the festivities with a bang.
