Bhanu Attri, a 39-year-old Hindu priest originally from Himachal Pradesh, has made history as the British Royal Navy’s first-ever Hindu chaplain—and its first non-Christian chaplain. After moving to Essex, UK, Attri completed a rigorous 29-week training program at Britannia Royal Naval College, including sea survival exercises and service aboard HMS Iron Duke. His appointment reflects the Navy’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and spiritual care for all personnel, regardless of faith. As chaplain, Attri will offer religious guidance, pastoral support, and conduct Hindu prayer ceremonies for naval officers. The Hindu Council UK endorsed his candidacy, citing his qualifications in Hindu scripture, leadership experience, and interfaith engagement. Attri’s achievement has been celebrated in India, with Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister calling it a moment of pride for the nation. His role is expected to inspire more British Hindus to consider careers in the armed forces, strengthening representation and cultural integration.
