[The Times of India] After Gyanvapi, ASI survey of Bhojshala temple in Madhya Pradesh

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) submitted its report on the scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in two sealed envelopes before Varanasi district judge Ajay Krishna Vishvesha. The ASI sought seven extensions to complete the survey. One envelope contained the report, while another had a list of articles found in debris at the mosque compound.

The defendants, Anjuman Intezamia Masajid (AIM), the Gyanvapi mosque management committee, requested that the report be filed in a sealed envelope and not sent to any party without a personal undertaking, through an affidavit, ensuring its confidentiality. Vishnu Shankar Jain, the lawyer representing the four plaintiffs, opposed this request.

Based on the ASI findings, it can be said that a “large Hindu temple” once existed at the site of the Gyanvapi mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi. The survey was ordered by the court after the Hindu petitioners claimed the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing temple. The ASI had submitted its survey report to the district court in a sealed cover on December 18.
