A professor and five students from Savitribai Phule Pune University were arrested on allegations of offending religious sentiments through an experimental play based on the life of actors who perform in Ramleela. The play, titled ‘Jab We Met’, was presented by the students of Lalit Kala Kendra, officially known as the Centre for Performing Arts, on the university premises.
The play led to a clash with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who objected to the play, arguing that it contained objectionable dialogues and scenes. Following the disruption of the play, the professor and students were also charged with rioting.
The university stated that it would form a fact-finding committee under the chairmanship of a retired district judge and take necessary action based on its report. The Pune police have deployed special teams to guard the campus.
The professor and the students were granted bail by a Pune court. The arrest of the students and the professor has been strongly criticized by a group of college professors.
