American Hindus, through HinduPACT’s affiliate American Hindus Against Defamation (AHAD), have demanded the immediate dismissal of Peter Navarro, President Trump’s trade adviser, after he labeled “Brahmins” as profiteering from Russia-India oil trade. In a widely circulated interview, Navarro claimed Indian refiners bought cheap Russian crude, processed it, and sold it abroad at a profit—arguing taxpayers ultimately subsidize such gains. AHAD strongly rebuked the comment as more than misplaced criticism—it’s “a colonial-era trope” that fosters division and misrepresents Hindu society. Ajay Shah, AHAD’s Executive Chair, denounced the remark as “weaponised Hinduphobia,” warning that it damages bilateral ties and has no place in U.S. politics. The group also criticized Navarro for sharing a photo of Indian Prime Minister Modi in saffron robes, considering it a mockery of Hindu spirituality and a breach of diplomatic decorum. Deepti Mahajan, AHAD’s president, called it either religious hostility or diplomatic recklessness—or both—and deemed it a serious violation of cultural respect.
