Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds the portfolio of state finance minister, presented the state budget on Friday. This marked his 15th budget presentation and his eighth as chief minister. Siddaramaiah hinted at a budget outlay of approximately ₹3.80 lakh crore, surpassing the previous budget expenditure in July last year.
Given the state’s severe drought conditions, a substantial allocation to the agricultural sector was anticipated. Siddaramaiah had previously met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi seeking funds for drought relief from the central government.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shiva Kumar expressed confidence in the budget, stating that it would give a new direction to the state. The budget was presented at 10.15 am, following a special cabinet meeting.
However, tensions flared in the Karnataka legislative council ahead of the budget, with Siddaramaiah labelling BJP members as “hooligans” during a discussion on budget allocations by the Centre. This led to an altercation and the session was subsequently adjourned.
