The UK High Court has delivered a landmark ruling while dismissing a defamation case brought by Islamist YouTuber Mohammed Hijab against The Spectator and journalist Douglas Murray. Hijab claimed he was defamed after being accused of making inflammatory remarks against Hindus in Leicester. The court, however, ruled that Hijab had indeed targeted Hindus in his speech and not just “Hindutva,” rejecting his attempt to separate Hindutva from Hinduism. The judgment emphasized that Hinduism and Hindutva are intrinsically linked, and that attacks on “Hindutva” in this context amounted to attacks on Hindus themselves. The judge described Hijab’s evidence as unreliable and dishonest, stating that he “lied on significant issues” during proceedings. This decision not only cleared Murray and The Spectator of wrongdoing but also set an important precedent by recognizing Hindutva as an inseparable aspect of Hindu identity, strengthening global Hindu advocacy efforts.
