  • The How India Gives 2025 report by the Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy highlights that ordinary Indian households are the primary drivers of the nation’s charitable landscape, contributing an estimated $6.5 billion annually. This data challenges the common perception that institutional or corporate philanthropy dominates the sector, showing instead that generosity is a widespread, culturally embedded practice across the country. The study finds that a significant majority of Indians participate in giving through cash, in-kind donations like food and clothing, and volunteering. Most of this support is directed toward religious organizations and the destitute, with over ninety percent of donors citing a sense of religious duty or moral obligation as their primary motivation. Ultimately, the report illustrates that everyday giving by the masses forms the backbone of social support in India, deeply rooted in the spiritual and social fabric of the community.
