The Shree Jagannatha Temple in Bath, the only Hindu temple in the city and the only temple in Europe dedicated to Lord Shree Jagannatha, is facing demolition by the Bath and North East Somerset Council. The temple, which opened in 2021 in a temporary location at the former Culverhay School, may need to relocate as the council plans to demolish the school buildings to build two new schools.

Paul Roper, the council’s cabinet member for economic and cultural sustainable development, assured that the council would engage with the temple over the plans and that the building containing the temple would be retained until July 2025. The council expects that part of the former school site not needed for the new schools could be used for housing or alternative community uses, possibly including the temple.

Ashish Rajhansha of the Hindu Temple expressed concern about finding a new location in time, warning that the temple may have to close for a period if a new location could not be found quickly. The temple, which has been their home for about three years, attracts visitors from around the world, particularly for the annual Rath Yatra, or Chariot Festival.
