On July 15, 2025, the Corpus Christi City Council in Texas will open its meeting with Hindu prayers drawn from ancient Sanskrit scriptures. Rajan Zed, a prominent Hindu statesman and interfaith leader, will deliver the invocation, reciting verses from the Rig-Veda, Upanishads, and Bhagavad-Gita. He plans to begin and end with “Om,” the sacred syllable symbolizing the universe. One featured verse from the Brahadaranyakopanishad—“Asato ma sad gamaya, Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya”—will be interpreted as a call to move from illusion to truth, darkness to light, and mortality to immortality. Zed will also encourage councilmembers to prioritize the welfare of others. Recognized globally for his interfaith work, Zed holds multiple advisory roles and has received the World Interfaith Leader Award. The event underscores Hinduism’s spiritual depth and its growing presence in the U.S., where approximately 3.2 million Hindus reside.
