An elderly Hindu woman named Pratibha Rani was severely beaten by a Muslim man, Nurul Amin, in Natehra village, Bangladesh, for chewing betel leaf during Ramadan. The incident occurred on March 19, 2024. Nurul Amin accused Pratibha Rani of disrespecting Islam and beat her with a bamboo stick. Despite many witnesses, no one intervened.
Pratibha Rani fell unconscious due to the beating and was initially taken to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to Chandpur Sadar Hospital for intensive care. She remains in critical condition with fractures in her legs and other parts of her body.
The incident drew attention after a post by Sonjib Chandra Das, a drama director and staff correspondent of Blitz, on Facebook. Das expressed concern about the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh and called for exemplary punishment for such cruelty.
Leaders of the Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance blamed the ruling Awami League for the persecution of Hindus in the country, asserting that such incidents have increased since the general elections on January 7. They demanded a judicial inquiry into the cases of cruelty against Hindus in the country. Palash Kanti Dey, Executive Secretary General and spokesperson of the Hindu Grand Alliance, condemned the attack on Pratibha Rani and demanded stern action against Nurul Amin.
