LiveOnNY, a federally designated organ procurement organization in New York, recently hosted a cultural competence training session titled “Understanding Hinduism.” Led by Dr. Vipul Patel, an oncologist and representative of BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Flushing, the presentation aimed to educate staff on Hindu beliefs that influence decisions around organ donation. The session included a PowerPoint on Hindu sanskaras and the virtue of daan (giving), emphasizing that organ donation is a personal choice shaped by religious and cultural values. Patel addressed concerns such as the Hindu preference for whole-body cremation and how to approach families sensitively. The event, attended by 25 staff members including CEO Leonard Achan, was part of LiveOnNY’s broader outreach to South Asian communities. Community liaison Dunesh Kaur highlighted health challenges in the community and her efforts to raise awareness through temple partnerships and bilingual materials. The initiative fostered trust and emotional intelligence in navigating organ donation conversations.
