Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, visited an RSS ‘shakha’ (local unit) in Karad, Maharashtra on January 2, 1940. During his visit, he addressed the Sangh swayamsevaks (volunteers) and expressed a sense of belongingness despite differences on certain issues. This visit was reported in the Marathi daily “Kesari” on January 9, 1940. The RSS communication wing, Vishwa Samvad Kendra (VSK), highlighted this event to counter accusations of the RSS being anti-Dalit. The VSK also mentioned that Mahatma Gandhi had visited an RSS camp in 1934 and observed volunteers from various castes and religions working together.
