While proponents say the party should listen to people’s voices, others dismiss the agenda as a non-starter.

A group of Nepali Congress leaders is attempting to include the restoration of a Hindu state in the agenda of the party’s central working committee meeting, scheduled for Thursday, and later in the Mahasamiti meeting from February 19 to 22. The Mahasamiti is the highest policy-making body of the Nepali Congress.

Under the banner of “Sanatan Hindu Rastra Nepal Sthapana Mahabhiyan”, this group proposes that the party lead efforts to restore the Hindu state, which was abolished in 2008. Congress leader Shankar Bhandari, a member of Parliament from Tanahun district, is leading this campaign.

The campaign aims to unite all pro-Hindu leaders in the party to strengthen their voice. In the last Mahasamiti meeting in 2018, around 30 percent of the members supported the agenda of restoring the Hindu state. Several party leaders plan to raise this issue at the central working committee meeting.
