Hindu community members say proposed Mississauga firework ban would impede religious freedoms

Community members pushed back against a proposed ban on consumer fireworks in a Mississauga city council meeting on Wednesday, saying it impedes religious freedom. Council pushed the vote to Oct. 15.

If approved, new laws would go into effect in January 2026 and outlaw the use and sale of fireworks for individual use.

Under the ban, public fireworks could be allowed for community events if they are done by a professional and approved by Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, according to a staff report that initially proposed the ban in May.
