Afghan Hindus happy with security, seek lands’ restitution

Afghan Hindus and Sikhs, once numbering around 700,000 in the 1970s, have dwindled to about 100 residents today due to decades of war and insecurity. Manjeet Singh Lamba, a community representative, praised the current peaceful environment under the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), noting improved safety and absence of ethnic discrimination. Many families who fled have begun returning, encouraged by the IEA’s support and a Ministry of Justice announcement regarding restitution of seized properties. Lamba emphasized the need for a dedicated committee or court to address property usurpation, which has plagued the community for over four decades. The IEA’s spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, affirmed their commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens, including Hindus and Sikhs, and pledged “extraordinary cooperation” in resolving property and visa issues. The community recently celebrated Vaisakhi peacefully, with security provided by the IEA, marking a hopeful shift in their status within Afghanistan.
