Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced the establishment of a Centre for Hindu Studies, along with centres for Buddhist and Jain studies. These centres will be part of the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. The creation of these centres was approved by the Executive Council of JNU during a meeting on May 29, with the aim to facilitate the implementation of the National Education Policy (2020) and the Indian Knowledge System at the university.
In a similar initiative, Delhi University (DU) established a Centre for Hindu Studies last year, which currently offers a master’s degree programme. DU plans to expand its educational offerings by introducing undergraduate courses in this field, aiming to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in Hindu studies. In addition to the Centre for Hindu Studies, DU also has a prominent Department of Buddhist Studies, which has been instrumental in promoting academic research in Buddhist philosophy, history, and practices. The budget for this initiative is estimated to be Rs 35 crore.
